The Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) Blue Line Light Rail Expansion was a design-build project that added 4.8 miles to the DART light rail network and linked downtown Rowlett, Texas, to the existing network at downtown Garland, Texas. The new line consisted of 4.8 miles of double LRT track and incorporated four shared freight / LRT grade road crossings, one interlocking, block signal indicators, aerial structures, and one new station. Additionally, over 2,000 feet of freight track realignment was required, necessitating the relocation of four freight crossing protection systems.
As the subcontractor, L.K. Comstock National Transit, Inc. (LKCNT) was responsible for:
- Designing and installing a simple catenary auto-tensioned (SCAT) OCS system
- Installing a cab code train control system with multiple grade crossings
- Relocating freight rail grade crossings protection equipment
- A complete communication system including subsystems such as SCADA, public address, visual message boards, intrusion alarm, fire alarm network and fiber optic connectivity
- Installing four owner furnished traction power substations
LKCNT was also responsible for the integration of OCS, traction power, communications and train control with existing systems. Additionally, the LKCNT team integrated the new line with the existing wayside terminus, the LRT vehicles and the operations center.
