Provided By
L.K. Comstock installed the signals system on Sound Transit’s new 15.6-mile light rail line linking downtown Seattle and communities along the route with Sea-Tac Airport.
For the signals system on the new line, L.K. Comstock installed 87 signals, 228 train-to-wayside communications cabinets, 59 train-to-wayside communications loops, 52 switch machines, 20 relay cases, 13 signal houses, 218 impedance bonds, and 890,000 feet of signal cable. Comstock’s work concluded in September of 2009 and the line began operating in the fall of 2009.
Sister company RailWorks Track Systems installed a portion of the direct-fixation track along the line.
Unique Features
A key challenge was installing the signal system in two tunnels along the route. Comstock upgraded the signal system used by both busses and trains in Seattle’s downtown tunnel. Comstock also installed the signal system and special lighting features for the new construction in the Beacon Hill tunnel along the route.
